9,000-km WDM Transmission of Three 2.5-Gbit/s Channels Covering a 5-nm Wavelength Range and Using No Pre-Emphasis

Abstract

Error-free megameter transmission distances of a high-speed optical channel have been readily achieved by utilizing the Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to efficiently compensate for fiber attenuation losses with near-quantum-limited amplified-spontaneous-emission (ASE) noise. [1,2] This achievement of point-to-point ultra-long-distance optical transmission is quite valuable for both undersea and terrestrial communications. Furthermore, we can more efficiently utilize the available fiber bandwidth by simultaneously transmitting many independent channels, with each channel located on a different wavelength.
