Abstract

The fiber amplifier is now established as a key component for practical optical communication networks because of its high gain and output power, low noise, and potential for multiband operation with little interchannel crosstalk. Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers1) are already in practical use in the 1.5 μm-band optical communication systems.
