Abstract

Optical fibre amplifiers have become the basic building blocks in the construction of extended optical networks. One specific implementation of a transparent optical cross-connect has been developed under a European collaborative RACE project, this is the Multi Wavelength Transport Network, or MWTN [1]. The switching node, whose detailed properties will be discussed, contains optical space switches and tunable filters and sources, and is an inherently lossy structure, such that optical amplification is necessary as an integral part of the switch fabric.
