Abstract

Optical Integrated Broadband Communication Networks (IBCN) will provide high throughput, so it is convenient to keep the information on optical form during the switching process to avoid the conversion between high bitrate optical and electronic signals. Techniques for photonic switching are consequently subject to tremendous interest. Central components for the optical switching process are gates and wavelength converters where the latter enables use of the wavelength dimension that is unique relative to electronic switching.
