Abstract

The feasibility of a trans-oceanic transmission system based on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) has been demonstrated in both re-circulating loop experiments[1] and in transmission experiments in excess of 9000 km[2]. Development of a highly reliable, commercial product containing EDFAs for use in undersea transmission facilities has been underway at AT&T for more than two years. Presented here is AT&T’s design of the EDFA-based repeater that will be used for the next generation of undersea transmission systems.
