Abstract

The emergence of 1.3µm praseodymium doped fluoride fibre amplifiers has over the past year generated immense interest within the field of optical telecommunications[1], as most current optical fibre systems installed worldwide operate at wavelengths around 1.3µm within the second telecommunications window. A practical device operating within this window is therefore likely to have a major impact on future network design and upgrade strategies. Furthermore, a 1.3µm amplifier could find application within broadband analogue distribution systems due to the lower dispersion penalty, and superior source characteristics at this wavelength as compared to 1.5µm.
