Abstract

Distributed erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA's) have promissing possibilities in optical communication systems. Applications include nonlinear long distance transmission and lossless distribution networks [1]. When designing a distributed EDFA for any transmission system application the noise performance is an important consideration but also the pump power consumption is of large importance.
