Numerical Investigation of Equalization Enhanced Phase Noise Penalties for MQAM Modulations in Few-Mode Fiber Transmission with Time Domain Equalization

Abstract

We numerically investigate a standard 3-mode transmission system with weakly or strongly coupled MUX/DEMUXes. Strong mode coupling arising in the MUX/DEMUX manifest a severe penalty due to equalization enhanced phase noise compared to weak coupling.
