Observation of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Nanostructures

Abstract

We observe the signature of spontaneous symmetry breaking in rotationally symmetric gold oligomers with isotropic far-field response. Oligomers exhibit varied near-fields for various incident-polarizations, leading to the symmetry breaking detected via second harmonic generation.
