Purple membrane suspensions: a natural random nonlinear photonic bandgap material

Abstract

The coherent and incoherent contribution to the nonlinear light scattering and the difference in angular dependence between linear and nonlinear light scattering from suspensions of bacteriorhodopsin show that this material exhibits nonlinear photonic bandgap properties.
