Abstract

We present a canonical Hamiltonian formulation of Maxwell’s equations in the presence of a nonlinear polarization. We then use this formulation to derive pulse propagation equations in a three-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) material with a Kerr nonlinearity. We start by writing a Hamiltonian that is equal to the energy in the electromagnetic field1
