Abstract
Current technologies and architecture result in exponentially escalating costs and do not target revenue generation within the network. They are also complex, failure prone, and power inefficient. Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables network providers to monetize higher layer functions and services based on software and to decouple development from the physical platforms. Carrier rationale and requirements driving the use of SDN are described.
