Abstract

Optical and electronic techniques eliminate the 10·log(N) upstream optical penalty inherent in 1×N optical splitters. With appropriate physical-layer hardware, any standards-based PON supports N > 2048. A 1×2048 10G-PON illustrates physical limits and scalability.
