Abstract

This paper qualitatively and quantitatively compares three classes of metro area data transport networks: Next Generation SONET/SDH, Metro Ethernet ring, and RPR. The quantitative results show that RPR and Ethernet rings have higher transport efficiency, while the qualitative discussions show that RPR has advantages in terms of provisioning, protection, and multi-service transport.
