Surface Modes in Photonic Band-Gap Fibers

Abstract

We describe an unusual class of waveguide modes that appear in optical waveguides with periodic claddings. These bound modes are localized near the core-cladding interface and are closely related to the surface modes encountered in semi-infinite planar periodic structures.
