Abstract

We present metamaterials featuring “artificial magnetism” at telecommunication frequencies. The combination of cut-wire pairs as “magnetic atoms” and a diluted metal yields a negative refractive index at 1.4 µm wavelength, with a transmittance exceeding 50%.
