Abstract
Lasercom technology offers the ability to provision very high data rates over long distances, realizing a unique set of capabilities. Maintaining a high speed lasercom link, engenders multiple challenges, which must be overcome with a number of layered techniques and technologies. The basic architecture of lasercom will be described, together with the various problems that must be overcome. I will describe the application and benefits of AO in the context of the overall lasercom challenge, and the other technologies that are simultaneously necessary to implement a highly reliable connection.
