Sympathetic Heating Spectroscopy: Probing Molecular Ions with Laser-Cooled Atomic Ions

Abstract

Sympathetic heating spectroscopy measures atomic and molecular ion spectra by observing the heating of a laser-cooled control ion. Limits of the method are tested using two isotopes of calcium. Applications for molecular ions are discussed.
