Abstract
We analyze migration of electrons on a 1 fs time scale in rare gas clusters following irradiation of the cluster with an attosecond or XFEL pulse as it will be available at LCLS in Stanford and XFEL in Hamburg. The initial removal of (atomic) bound electrons through photons from the light pulse leads to the formation of electron holes as well as a substantial positive background charge of the cluster which prevents subsequently ionized electrons from leaving the cluster. Consequently, a substantial number of quasi free-electrons forms in the cluster. We will investigate these electrons which show interesting features, from non-equilibrium dynamics to fast core screening. The latter may play an important role for coherent diffraction imaging, one of the primary goals of XFEL science.
