Abstract

Corona ignition systems provide a spatially extended non-thermal plasma with significantly better ignition properties than spark ignition systems. This article explains their general principles and summarizes results from engine tests on different passenger car and stationary natural gas engines with BorgWarner’s EcoFlash corona ignition system, including investigations of EGR- and lean tolerance, catalyst heating and charge motion variation.
