Abstract

The current state-of-the-art ignition technology for spark-ignited, industrial, natural gas fueled engines utilizes a modulated capacitive-discharge ignition (MCDI) system. The MCDI technology employed is typically capable of supplying ignition energy from two to twenty times that of conventional capacitive-discharge (CD) ignition technology. The MCDI approach discussed also includes the ability to tune or “shape” the delivered ignition energy in such a way as to optimize engine performance. The experiences discussed will include a review of those obtained through fundamental research as well as various field applications of the tunable, MCDI-type ignition technology.
