Brillouin scattering in silica microwires

Abstract

We report the observation of Brillouin scattering arising from Rayleigh acoustic waves in silica microwires with diameter from 0.8–2 microns. The frequency shift behavior is qualitatively explained by the dispersion relation of the fundamental acoustic modes.
