Abstract

With its three vertically stacked photodiodes, the Foveon X3 image sensor enables direct captures of red, green and blue light at each pixel in an image during a single exposure. It greatly reduces computational time for interpolation for missing colors in conventional Bayer sensors and therefore color aliasing. Meanwhile, with the new Super-Fine Detail (SFD) exposure mode, cameras equipped with Foveon X3 technology can capture as many as 51 megapixel-equivalent noiseless images with an extensive dynamic range.
