Abstract

Akhmediev breathers (ABs) are analytic solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing modulation instability. These particular solutions that are periodic in time and localized in space, and especially their asymptotic limits the Peregrine [1] and Kuznetsov-Ma soliton [2], have recently attracted significant interest for their potential connection with hydrodynamic rogue waves and indeed experiments in optical fibers have allowed these specific localization dynamics to be observed for the first time.
