Spectral Line-by-Line Pulse Shaping

Abstract

Pulse shaping [1] is now a widely deployed approach for generating user-specified picosecond and femtosecond optical waveforms for a broad range of research fields, including coherent quantum control, optical communications, RF photonics, few cycle pulse compression, and nonlinear optical biomedical imaging. In the past pulse shaping has been performed only at the group-of-lines level, meaning that individual spectral lines from the mode-locked pulse train were not resolved or addressed. On the other hand, in recent years stabilization of mode-locked laser frequency combs has revolutionized optical frequency metrology [2,3]. Here the individual spectral lines in the mode-locked field and their frequency stability is of primary importance. In spectral line-by-line shaping, we are performing experiments in which pulse shapers now resolve and address individual lines in a frequency comb. By bringing together the fields of pulse shaping and frequency combs, line-by-line pulse shaping moves us closer to true optical arbitrary waveform generation.
