Angle-dispersion compensation and phase characterization of multiple CARS signals in LiNbO3 towards extremely-short optical pulse generation

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to generate sub-femtosecond class optical pulses using multiple coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) signals in solids at room temperature [1, 2]. Unlike gases, refractive-index dispersion of solids is generally so large that the two collinear input pulses cannot efficiently generate CARS signals owing to the phase-mismatching limitation [3]. Thus two input pulses are forced to be noncollinear with some crossing angle. In this case, multiple CARS signals are generated with considerable angle dispersion. Hence, the angle-dispersion compensation is indispensable as the first step. The next step is to characterize the spectral phase of multiple CARS signals. This is important not only from the viewpoint of the phase-difference compensation but also from the viewpoint of physics in quantum optics. It is an interesting issue whether or not Raman-coherence formation of multiple CARS signals in a condensed matter which strongly correlate with coherent radiation fields within the nonresonant-three-model scheme is possible. In the present paper we compensated for the angle dispersion of multiple CARS signals in LiNbO3 and characterized their spectral phase at room temperature.
