Abstract

Optical effects can be enhanced by strong local fields in nanostructured materials. Such local-field enhancement is particularly interesting for nonlinear effects, which scale with a high power of the incident field. Of particular interest have been plasmon resonances of metal nanostructures, which can lead to extremely strong local fields, but are unavoidably associated with losses. Resonant waveguide gratings1 (RWG) are all-dielectric, transparent, sub-wavelength structures, which can also lead to strong local fields within the structure. A factor of nine enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) was recently demonstrated using a RWG functionalized with an organic nonlinear molecule.2 In this Paper, we demonstrate more than a factor of 150 enhancement of second-harmonic generation from an all-dielectric, unfunctionalized, and thereby lossless RWG. Polarization dependence of the enhancement suggests that the origin of the enhancement is a favorable interaction of the resonant mode with the inherent surface nonlinearity of the dielectric material.
