Abstract

Propagation of a wave in the main (z) direction generally results in a change in its original transverse pattern E 0(x, y). If the medium is % homogeneous, as for the free space or as in planar and round waveguides, propagation is described conveniently by the expansion of the transverse distribution into the set of eigen-modes, so that
