Hyper-Rayleigh scattering from a three-dimensional disordered array of metal nanoparticles

Abstract

The physical properties of metal nanoparticles are of considerable interest in both fundamental and technological aspects. Being the effective tool for the study of surfaces, interfaces, and nanostructures, optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) was used for investigating small silver particles in island films.1 In this reference, however, nonlinear optical measurements were carried out only in specular direction, although island films are essentially disordered systems giving rise to incoherent and diffuse SHG (or hyper-Rayleigh scattering). In this case, the most efficient are measurements of scattering indexes that give important morphological and statistical information about the system. Important additional data (local-field factors) can be obtained from the linear (Rayleigh) scattering indexes.
