Observation of the He 11S0 - 21S0 transition: a new measurement of the ground state Lamb shift

Abstract

Two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy at λ=120 nm has been used to measure the He 1s2 1S0 - ls2s 1S0 transition frequency for the first time. This is the shortest wavelength two-photon spectroscopy experiment to date, for which the calculated transition rate is in general agreement with the experimental data. This technique not only eliminates uncertainties due to the Doppler effect, but the metastable 2S state with its the inherently narrow linewidth (8Hz) allows the use of a delayed 266nm ionisation detection pulse, thereby minimising AC Stark shifts.
