Coherent control of Bloch oscillations–from breathing mode quantum beats to spatial oscillations

Abstract

Bloch oscillations as predicted by Bloch and Zener in the 1930s were recently observed in semiconductor superlattices (SLs) by a number of techniques.1 In these experiments, exci-ton wave packets are optically excited and detected by various techniques. Theoretical calculations2 have shown that such optically excited wave-packet oscillations are not necessarily associated with a harmonic spatial oscillation as envisaged by Bloch and Zener. Recently, we have presented the first direct measurement, to our knowledge, of the spatial displacement amplitude of Bloch oscillations3 and have shown that, for the chosen optical excitation conditions, there is indeed a harmonic spatial motion.
