Abstract

With the advent of the vapor cell magneto-optical trap (MOT), research on the slowing of atomic beams was deemphasized. But the success of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in Rb,1 Li,2 and Na3 has demanded better ways to load more atoms into MOTs and renewed interest in optimizing the slowing of atomic beams and the coupling of the slow atoms into traps.
