Abstract
The development of near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) where light transmits through a subwavelength-size probe has enabled optical imaging with so-called super resolution, i.e., resolution below the conventional λ/2 diffraction limit. There has been extensive progress in this area; however, performance for some problems has been limited due to background emission or absorption in extended samples. In other applications such as in biological studies, TJV photoexcitation required for some studies leads to collateral photochemical damage. Indeed, such improvements have been the focus of the recent demonstration of two-photon excitation of single molecules in confocal microscopy.1 In this paper we report the extension of two- photon excitation to near-field studies and the first observation, to our knowledge, of singlemolecule imaging in this geometry.
