Abstract

Complex order parameter equations generalize the usual Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions in nonequilibrium systems and have been shown to provide a universal description of pattern formation and defect dynamics in diverse physical systems [1]. We have recently shown [2], that such order parameter equation descriptions provide a robust description of spatio-temporal dynamics in two-level wide aperture Class A, Band C lasers. This latter formulation is a physically and mathematically self-consistent, verifiable rate equation model for wide aperture lasers avoiding spurious nonphysical behaviour associated with standard adiabatic elimination procedures.
