Solitons in waveguide arrays with a quadratic nonlinearity

Abstract

Effects involving second order nonlinearities attract increasing interest because “cascading” of second-order effects using a frequency doubling and subsequent down-conversion produces nonlinear phase shifts similar to the Kerr effect [1]. Due to the larger effective nonlinearity compared to the Kerr-effect cascading may decrease the power needed for all-optical switching.
