Abstract
The writing of waveguides into laser host materials gives greater confinement of the pump beam and leads to low thresholds (<20mW [1]) as well as the possibility for small, robust and simple laser cavities. Waveguides produced by ion implantation have the advantage that the depth of the guide is readily controllable and complex waveguide structures can be written.
