Abstract

It is often useful to describe optical interactions by locally interacting cavity modes driven by and damping into an external free field [1], Recent interest in atomic cavities and the possibility of atomic lasers prompts the question of whether a similar description is possible for an atomic wave or field; the answer is yes.
