Stopped and evansecent atomic wavepackets generated by the interaction with a laser beam

Abstract

We study the propagation of a two-state atomic wavepacket through a nearly resonant laser beam in situation where the atomic momentum is comparable to the photon momentum. In those cases the photon recoil is important and there is a strong interplay between the external and internal degrees of freedom of the atom.
