Observation of cw light amplification in a lambda-type system of Rb atoms due to atomic coherence

Abstract

When a strong coupling field (with frequency ω.) applied to the transition from Fg=2 level (|3>) to F =1 level (| 2>), see Fig. 1, the absorption of the atomic medium for a weak probe field (with frequency ωp), tuned to resonance with the transition from Fg=l level (| 1>) to Fe=1 level, will be essentially reduced due to the atomic coherence induced between the two ground state levels.
