Visible lasing of Pr3+, Yb3+:LiYF4 pumped via sensitized photon avalanche upconversion

Abstract

Laser emission of Pr:LiYF4 (Pr:YLF) was demonstrated both in the pulsed [1,2] and cw mode [3] on several wavelengths in the visible spectral range by direct excitation of the upper laser level 3P0. Upconversion processes are investigated in order to obtain a more applicable pump scheme than direct pumping of the 3PJ-multiplet.
