Abstract

Recent progress in manufacture technology of graded-index polymer fibre has increased significantly the bandwidth of POF (-2GHz-km) [1]. This has made poly(methyl methacrylate)-based (PMMA) optical fibre very attractive for optical LANs. With the development of POF systems, various POF devices would become necessary [2]. Also, solid-state dye optical amplifiers or laser sources of wide tunability through visible to near infrared wavelengths are of great interest for biomedical and laser spectroscopic applications [3]. Optical amplification in dye-doped graded-index POF has been demonstrated successfully by researchers in Keio University in Japan [2,4].
