Abstract
We examine the physics of coherent emission from a compact photonic crystal excited at the photonic band edge. Recent experimental and theoretical work has provided precise and detailed characterization of the excitation of a 30 layer photonic crystal of GaAs/Al As by a pulse of _2 ps duration. The pulse is spectrally coincident with the first transmission resonance of the lower photonic band edge. In that work a more than order of magnitude reduction in the group velocity of the transmitted picosecond pulse is observed. At the same time the pulse experiences near unit transmission with negligible distortion.
