Abstract

Odd and irregular patterns are well known m photorefractive systems but careful studies have revealed evidence of deterministic chaos in the temporal evolution1 and complex, but ordered, spatio-temporal dynamics such as chaotic itinerancy (irregularly- timed deterministically driven, sequential mode alternation)2,3 and pattern evolution that is efficiently described by defect dynamics.3,4 These prior studies have been focused mainly on unidirectional ring resonators using two-beam coupling3 or phase- conjugate resonators in which the medium is used as one mirror.4
