Dynamics of electrons at interfaces: experimental study of localization in two dimensions

Abstract

The energy levels and dynamics of the unoccupied electronic states determine both the electronic properties and chemical activity of an interface. We have used angle-resolved two-photon photoemission1,2 (TPPE) to measure the energies and effective masses of excess electrons in molecular-thickness layers of various alkanes on the Ag(III) surface. This investigation demonstrates the application of angle-resolved TPPE as a new probe of electron localization in 2-D systems.
