Transient optically induced noncentrosymmetry in a solution of octupolar molecules

Abstract

Following group-theoretical and quantum mechanical considerations, octupolar molecules have recently been proposed as an alternative to traditional donor-acceptor molecular design schemes.1 In particular, it has been predicted that higher quadratic hyperpolarizabilities β and increased transparency could be achieved by this new molecular engineering scheme.1,2 However, since the absence of dipole moment in octupolar molecules prevents dipolar orientation, β measurement cannot be performed by the conventional electric-field- induced-second-harmonic-generation (EFISHG) experiment.
