Nonlinear phase-mismatch spectroscopy of thin films

Abstract

The signal observed by degenerate or nearly degenerate four wave mixing from thin films is a coherent average of several contributions. It contains contributions from χ(3) and χ(5) of both sample and substrate (and possibly even higher order susceptibilities) which can be analyzed through the three gratings which are formed by the pairwise interaction of the three incident beams. We use the fact that gratings in a thin film on a thick substrate will usually diffract a probe beam into several grating orders quite independently of the relative directions of the incident beams whereas only exact beam geometries that satisfy phase matching requirements produce a signal from the substrate.
