Abstract

A simple but efficient way of obtaining optical pulses from semiconductor lasers is to modulate directly the injection current to a laser, termed gain switching.1 In actual operation of such a pumping scheme, dc bias current is usually added to a rf modulation current for attaining a stable pulse train. In this pumping scheme, we found fully chaotic irregular behavior in the resulting optical pulse train.
