Nonlinear optics in photonic band structures

Abstract

It has been proposed recently that spontaneous emission can be inhibited within forbidden spectral bands (photonic band gaps) arising in structures with strong 3-D periodic modulations of the refractive index when the period is comparable to half of the emission wavelength.1,2 Subsequently, it has been shown3 that the suppression of the density of photonic states, which characterizes a band gap, can cause the inhibition of resonant dipole-dipole interactions (RDDIs) in excited systems (atomic complexes, molecules, or excitons) having resonant optical transitions in the band gap. Further studies show that media exhibiting anomalous dispersion can have alternating bands of enhanced and suppressed spontaneous emission and RDDI (band peaks and band gaps). Diverse and profound modifications of nonlinear processes are predicted to occur in such bands.
