Abstract
Stimulated IR emission (near 2 μm) is observed from crystals of Ho3+:Y3Al5O12 (Ho:YAG) as a consequence of electronic transitions from Stark levels of the 5I7 manifold to Stark levels within the ground state manifold 5I8 of trivalent holmium. Spectroscopic examination of other excited Ho3+(4f10[SL]J) manifolds having energies as high as 48,000 cm−1 reveals several possibilities for energy upconversion and the likely occurrence of stimulated emission in the UV.
