Abstract

Transparent droplets 5-100 μm. in diameter act as high Q cavities in the presence of light. Lorentz-Mie scattering theory for a micrometer size sphere predicts1 a dense spectrum of partial wave resonances spaced throughout the visible wavelengths. These modes, called morphology-dependent resonances (MDRs), provide the necessary feedback mechanism for coherent processes such as stimulated Raman scattering (SRS)2,3 and lasing.4,5
